Hanging off the back of the house is a structure that could be called a porch. It’s not very stable, though (it was previously supported by the cistern I removed a couple of years ago) and the roof leaked enough that it didn’t serve much of a function anymore, so I went to my default action: get rid of it:
I started by tearing the old corrugated steel panels off the top. They were strong enough to hold me up while I removed them, but it all felt pretty shaky:
This left me with just the 2×6 roof rafters and frame. Working up on a ladder with these felt a little unsafe so I pulled my trailer underneath to stand on and, if needed, catch me if I fell.
The roof rafters were both nailed and screwed together with some very old, rusty hardware. It took a couple of hours to get these apart but eventually they were gone, leaving only the porch frame:
The frame came apart easier than I expected, leaving a couple of sad supports all by themselves:
After digging out the two posts and cleaning up the mess (I gave the corrugated panels to a neighbor who was building a chicken coop and didn’t care if they were rusty) this was finished. The whole thing only took about 5 hours, and even though the back of the house now looks a bit bare I’ll add another porch later on after the roof is replaced. For now I’ll call yet another project:
